Hollerado

Just finished up a portrait from the Ottawa Tulip Festival 2013 from a couple of weeks ago; it's of Menno Versteeg from Hollerado.  This portrait was an incredible challenge to paint, as the facial direction and expression were not in the usual angles and format.

My biggest question was, "What's he looking at?" When I took the photos of Menno, I had asked him to look in a certain direction, and he chose 'up.'  So, in the spirit of one of their latest videos, "Pick Me Up," I thought, well, he's looking at hot air balloons!!!  That's it!

So here he is, in a creative-licence version of the festival:

And one of me with it for scale!

Spent most of my day out and about in the fresh air, at one point watching a rapper named Jesse Dangerously (not what I had expected to be watching!) but good to get out of my comfort zone once in a while.  Thank God for sunlight, I thought it had disappeared...on to my relentless painting project!

oh dear oh dear

Three-thirty am and I can't stop painting.  Creative bug must be taken when it arrives.  But I just did stop painting.  I'm here in my blog, right?   Good night.

Rembrandt

Self Portrait with Two Circles, 1660. Kenwood House, London

Self Portrait as Zeuxis, c. 1662. One of 2 painted self-portraits in which Rembrandt is turned to the left.[77]Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne

I was looking at some oil portraits today, and I came across these self-portraits of Rembrandt in his later years. He did many self-portraits during his lifetime.  I love the chiaroscuro; I also found very interesting that the Zeuxis one is only one of two where his head is turned to the left.  Goes to show you find something new every day!

Draw

I had a pretty good time at figure drawing tonight; the light was making the model pass out (they turned it off), so there weren't really shadows.  But, I managed to get some decent poses in.  I really will post those darn things when I get a batch of time.

To all artists out there:  carry on!!!  Got to paint!

Cobbler

Here's a couple of photos from my last trip to Montreal.  I was so excited to be wearing my new spring zip around shoes that I kept taking pictures of my feet.  And there's me in a bike shop window, contemplating the world of Cindy Sherman'esque' visual ideas again.

Starting a new Montreal series of paintings soon!!!!!!!
