Back near the easel again; having a hard time finding the muse during this holiday season.  Wanted to start a painting before my trip, but have since changed course.  Do I begin where I left off, or do I scrap it and start over?

After a white-knuckle drive home along the 401 last night, heading up to Montreal for some more sights and visits; at least the sun is shining in this blustery, icy, frigid northern weather!

We went out and I got carded tonight! Life is good! Very good!!!
Down here in the Banana Belt I heard a priceless Tom Waits interview on the radio today.  He said many interesting things; my favourite:  "They say life is actually just the dead on vacation."

401 pit stop! The sun is so bright here that people are wearing sunglasses in the restaurant :)

Looking to See

Bored's too dark outside.  So an artist is often their own best (or available) model; here are some silly shots, looking more like mug-passport shots.  Meet the creature...

I think I'll have to do a thorough self-portrait soon, so this may be the conscious or unconscious warming-up...

A bit like Ingres

The model and poses reminded me of Ingres tonight; she had a bit of a hard time keeping the poses because she felt faint, so I included one that was going well and then, well, it ended after about 7 minutes.

Feeling a bit like I'm living in a Russian novel; I think I've finally unchained my heart.

Tonight my fortune cookie said:

"Every man is a volume if you know how to read him."
I think yesterday was a bit of a yin-yang day.  Anyway, recently got back from running over fluff and snow in the sun.  Hoping things are going to look up...

As we all prepare for the nutty holiday season, I thought this quote would be apt:

"You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm."

Tonight's model & poses had a very Renaissance Baroque feel to them; I think I tapped into my Muse and saw the light...anyhow, I had a great time!  I think I like the orange one best.

Feeling a little more human; just had my cappuccino.  I think filter coffee is a terrible disaster.  So, In the spirit of not making any headway with my oil painting at the moment, I'll offer up this quote:

"But if you have nothing at all to create, then perhaps you create yourself."

--Carl Jung

Going to fill some of the void with figure drawings tonight--I'll post them ce soir!

À bientôt!

I think I have to start my painting's been a sparse period.  Still planning my creative adventure for the new year; it's always brewing in the back of my mind--I guess that's how it stays alive in some sort of dormant, flexible way.

Incredible, fantastic moon tonight; a bit lopsided, but I guess that gives it character!  So orange it looks almost edible.

Vernissage at Orange tonight

A nice night at Orange; here are some pictures from the vernissage.  Good to talk to my fellow artists!

Looking forward to the vernissage tonight at Orange Art Gallery!  Also a vernissage at Ottawa School of Art for the Holiday Sale--I'm going to go to Orange first--not sure if I'll make it to OSA.  See you there!!!

An Eclectic Night

Went out of my comfort zone and tried some different techniques tonight; I had a really great time painting and drawing the concentration was so intense that my feet went numb.  A good numb.
And lo and behold, I was being sketched by another artist while I was when that happens! (Actually, it's never happened before, so that's pretty cool...)  So here are my three Rubenesque poses from this eve: please forgive the black and white one--I lost the eye whites somewhere.  Although excited about the bright watercolour, I think I like the blue and green sketch the best.

World, watch out, I just practiced some old tunes on a very dusty keyboard...I think it's all about the left hand realizing there is indeed a right hand as well.  Not sure if that's going to the meantime I butcher sweet music for fun...

The Orange Christmas Show

The day has finally come; I just dropped off my 10 8x8 minis.  It's been a blast creating these little pieces--each one is like its own little universe.  A lot of decision-making and creative energy went into these.  I'm still a bit surprised that I created the 'Apple Store' one just a few days before Steve Jobs died...weird.

All of the scenes were from in and around Ottawa--seconds and minutes of my life where a certain characteristic of the moment captured my heart, attention, and screamed for camera-oh-where-is-my camera?! --nanoseconds in which to free the ever-observant lens.  And I finally figured out, with the help of the Fools, that it is the Salamander Theatre company on the set of Othello in two of my works.  Anyhow, all verbal prattle aside, here they are in a nutshell.  Don't they look like colourful candy? :O  You can tell I'm excited...

All paintings are $250 each, 8x8 inches, Oil on Gallery Canvas

27th Annual Holiday Fundraising Art Sale ByWard Market

It was a nice night at SKETCH last night; lots of people!

Today I submitted a couple of drawings and a painting to the Ottawa School of Art in the ByWard Market for the December Fundraiser.  The sale is from Dec. 1-Dec. 18.

Here are the works I submitted:

I'll be assisting with sitting for the gallery Dec. 5 in the evening; come on by!

Well, it's Friday, so I'm in the mood for putting up some love quotes:

Love is a sweet tyranny, because the lover endureth his torments willingly.  ~Proverb

Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.  ~Rose Franken

Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and fans the bonfire.  ~François Duc de La Rochefoucauld

He felt now that he was not simply close to her, but that he did not know where he ended and she began.
~Leo Tolstoy

Love is no respecter of age or practicality
Neither morality: unabashed
She enters where she will
Unheeding that her immortal fires
Burn up human hearts...
~Phillip Pulfrey, from Beyond Me

Those who are faithful know only the trivial side of love; it is the faithless who know love's tragedies.  ~Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891

A great model

Tonight's model was fantastic.  She looked like she came right out of a Pre-Raphaelite painting.  I wish I could do a painting like that of her!
Anyhow, here are my 20 and 30 minute sketches; I used watercolour pencil, intending to attack them with water when I came home, but now I'm not so sure--I think I like what happened.

A Long, Harrowing Ride

Well, here we are; the second-last mini.  It's been a wild, terrible, painful, enlightening, inspiring, gut-wrenching journey.  So in other words, just beautiful.  Will post the next one by the end of the week.

"A Company of Fools 2," Oil on Gallery Canvas, 8x8 inches

What is a Timeraiser?
Timeraiser is like speed dating for volunteerism. Throughout the evening, meet with different agencies and match your skills to their needs. Once you have
made your matches, you are eligible to bid on artwork. The big twist is rather than bid money, you bid volunteer hours.

Thanks to our national partnership with WestJet, we will be giving away a pair of WestJet tickets, anywhere WestJet flies, the night of the Timeraiser.

A Poem

Thought I'd share a snippet of one of my favourite poems today:

She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces thro' the room,
 She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
             She look'd down to Camelot.
 Out flew the web and floated wide;
 The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
              The Lady of Shalott.

Alfred Lord Tennyson, from "The Lady of Shalott"

Another Mini

Currently working on my second-last mini.  I'm enjoying the little paintings, but really looking forward to flourishing my brush and painting with my arm rather than my fingertips.  Soon.  For now, here is the seventh of ten:

"Walking on Elgin, Ottawa," Oil on Gallery Canvas, 8x8 inches

Excited about my new Chuck Taylor's.

Another quote :)

You have to walk carefully in the beginning of love; the running across fields into your lover's arms can only come later when you're sure they won't laugh if you trip.

A Company of Fools

I took this shot in the summer; I believe it's the Company of Fools doing a rendition of Shakespeare.  I'll have to do my research.  For now, the title will be in flux.

A Company of Fools, Oil on Gallery Canvas, 8x8 inches

Après Dark

Got out to a show last night--a couple of the photos had really neat atmosphere--a bit surreal--kind of liked it!  I'll probably be posting some inspired paintings from the concert in a little while.  In the meantime, here I am...looking a bit strange and rather ephemeral...

Figure session

Here are some 20 min poses from tonight's session; I've been getting some distortion due to the fact that I'm sitting down to draw--I think I'll bring my easel next time.  Foreshortening while sitting is a double-whammy!

Shows Update

I just posted the dates for several upcoming shows in my 'shows' section; I'll post the details as the shows come up.

Ottawa Little Theatre

Tomorrow night is the Fall Awards Show at the Ottawa Little Theatre--I'll see everyone there!  Looking forward to viewing all the new artwork.

Sunday, November 6, 2011

Happy to say that I actually ran 11km earlier today;  I just couldn't stop running--I think I sprouted wings.  Perhaps it's the strange ring around the moon tonight.
The Vintage Clothing Show was interesting this afternoon; I 'got told' about my photo-taking.  Still, I think I managed to snap some potentially good shots for later.

Well, back to the easel for me.  Maybe if I stopped doing all this other stuff I'd actually get some painting done!

Overlooking Mont Tremblant, Québec--SOLD

Just found out that one of my favourite little pieces found a new home:

"Overlooking Mont Tremblant, QC," Oil on Canvas, 12x10 inches, $275" SOLD
 at the Ottawa Little Theatre

I don’t know why we all hang on to something we know we’re better off letting go.
It’s like we’re scared to lose what we don’t even really have.
Some of us say we’d rather have that something than absolutely nothing.
But the truth is:
“To have it halfway is harder than not having it at all.”

Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled!

Thrilled to say that I have been back to what I love to do most--tonight I went to my first figure drawing class in about 15 years!!!  Love it, love it, love it.  I'll definitely be back next week.  Here are some of the 20 and 30 min poses.  Not too scrappy for having been gone so long, I think!  Cheers.
